NeoCon 2017 in Review

Experience Commercial Design from Every Angle

The Merchandise Mart “gates” open, and the festivities begin, but not without a pre-party and some site seeing. Attending NeoCon, the largest commercial design convention in the Midwest means getting the first glimpse of all that is new and innovative in the commercial design industry. As an attendee, you jot down and confirm participation in 3-6 vendor hosted parties, make loose plans of the showrooms you should visit and strap on your most comfortable pair of “sort of dressy” shoes. If you are a seasoned NeoCon attendee than you know to bring band-aids for the inevitable blisters, pack light to accommodate 3 days’ worth of  NeoCon loot and do some serious pre-planning if you actually intend to hit all of the showrooms on your list and still catch the vendor serving up free lunch.

But NeoCon isn’t really about the free lunch and endless parties. NeoCon gives Designers and Influencers a chance to take in, and validate all of the trends on the horizon and create a framework for future designs. We use the term “trends” lightly here, because we understand that good design isn’t based on one singular trend. We’d say the show is more of a representation of how to physically support ways that people inhabit and evolve in their space. So, to ensure the accuracy of our observations, we interviewed a few local designers from Perkins+Will (Minneapolis) along with our internal team to discuss the NeoCon 2017 experience “from every angle.” We’ve combined and compiled these observations into one tidy two-and-a-half-minute video. Curious? See the video below.

“It’s such an inspirational thing, to just walk through The Mart and see how all of these different manufacturers choose to tell their story”
